"The Immigrant City": Lawrence, located near Boston on the Merrimack River, was the nation's first planned industrial city. The large numbers of immigrants from which it got its sobriquet were fodder for the cotton and woolen textile mills that boomed in the early 20th Century.
There is a cool museum there dedicated to the history of Lawrence, labor history in general, and the great mill strike of 1912.
