There is/was a camera obscura in downtown Edinburgh just a few blocks from Edinburgh Castle, reached my a narrow staircase up about 3 floors. The image is projected through a periscope-like tube onto a shallow
concave white surface
and can be rotated to show a 360° view of the surrounding streets and the castle. It's very cool, really nothing like I'd ever seen before and must have seemed wondrful before the technological age. The one in San Francisco is/was located next the Cliff House and being at ground level with mostly a view of the ocean was not nearly as dramatic. It also is a rotating periscope type. There were also built stationary devices high on hillsides if I recall from the brochure I kept. If you get a chance to see one of these they are remarkable.
