A soil horizon is a distinct layer of soil essentially parallel to the soil surface, differing in characteristics from adjacent layers above or below. The diffences may be in matrix color, texture, structure, parent material, or redoximorphic features. Horizons can be irregular in their margins and the boundaries can appear wavy, smooth, or tongued.
