DAW Books was formed in 1971 by Donald A. Wollheim along with wife Elsie Wollheim. The name of the publishing house is derived from the initials of Donald A. Wollheim, natch. Wollheim was a former editor for Ace Books until 1971 when he departed. He created DAW Books in 1971 as a specialty publisher devoted to works of SF/ fantasy. The house has been in existence for over 3 decades and currently has well over 1,000 titles in their stable.

DAW Books has a long history of discovering and nurturing new talent. DAW introduced Tanith Lee, C. J. Cherryh, Tad Williams and many others to the world of SF/ fantasy.

Donald A. Wollheim has passed away but leadership rests in the capable hands of Elizabeth Wollheim (daughter of the founders), and Sheila Gilbert. It is still a small privately held publisher, though they are part of the huge Penguin/Putnam Publishing Group. Their address is as follows:

DAW Books
375 Hudson Street
