The World Leech Racing Championships were started by Sue Dethridge twenty years ago in
Dorrigo,
Australia.
Contestants stand in the center of a
trampoline and are encouraged to wriggle to the edge. According to Sue, one leech owner had claimed that he drank
coffee all night then let his leech suck his
caffeinated blood - but the
leech still came in last. Damn, I miss Australia. You just don't get that kind of thing here, you know?
