A common name for the reproductive organs of coniferous pine trees. Pine cones are either male (Microsporangiate) or female (Megasporangiate). The male cones grow in clumps near the top of the tree, and are short lived. They bare pollen that is knocked off and carried by the wind. The female cones are generally covered with woody scales, and bare ovules. The female cones are the variety most people are familiar with.
