French diplomat and public administrator. Born 1595, died 1650.

After serving as emissary to Venice (from 1627), Count d'Avaux headed a diplomatic mission to Denmark and Sweden in 1634. In 1635, he contributed to the achievement of an armistice between Sweden and Poland. As one of France's leading diplomats, he concluded treaties between France and Sweden in 1638 and 1641. During the years 1643-1648, he took part in the lengthy negotiations which led to the Peace of Westphalia.

In 1649, Count d'Avaux was made French Minister of Finance.
