Ludwig von Pastor's main claim to fame is his magnum opus, the Geschichte der Päpste seit dem Ausgang des Mittelalters ("History of the papacy since the end of the middle ages", published in 16 volumes from 1886 to 1933), in which he depicts the Counterreformation from a Catholic point of view.

From 1901 to 1920, Pastor headed the Austrian Institute in Rome.
