Regiment Nordland (thing)

(SS-Standarte Nordland)

Volunteer unit within the German Waffen-SS, with a significant component of Nordic volunteers. The regiment was formed on the orders of Heinrich Himmler on April 23, 1940, to attract volunteers from Denmark, Norway and Sweden. In December 1940, it was incorporated into the newly formed SS-Division Wiking, which consisted of:

• SS-Standarte Westland (with volunteers from the Benelux countries)
• SS-Standarte Germania (with volunteers from Germany)
• SS-Standarte Nordland

Regiment Nordland saw extensive action on the Eastern Front; atrocities and warcrimes committed by the volunteer regiment were never prosecuted in the Nordic countries.
