In Islamic folk culture, especially in Iran, Iraq, Pakistan and India, it is not uncommon to see ta'weez. These are amulets (either pieces of paper or jewelry with Qur'anic verses inscribed upon them), used as talismans, to ward off evil, to cure sundry ailments, etc.
There is no precedent for this practice in the Qur'an, or in the Sunnah, and though it is seldom specifically condemned, educated Muslims will often regard ta'weez as rank superstition.
