Utah Phillips has been broadcasting the
Loafer's Glory radio show live for the last few years from
KVMR, his local community radio station in
Philo, California. These broadcasts, which are syndicated over the
Pacifica Radio Network and heard around the country, are collages of rants, poetry, tales, and reminiscences mixed in with little known
folk music and storytelling collected and edited from over 1,000 tapes on everything under the sun. A few shows are just
hodgepodge cooked up for his personal enjoyment, but most are thematic: from tramping and labor (
historic and contemporary) to baseball and old friends and music... always music.
Unfortunately in April of 2002, due to health impediments, Utah was forced to choose between production of Loafer's Glory and his touring schedule. The show he did gratis but the touring is his bread and butter, so, reluctantly, the show was suspended. Utah hopes to still do a show every now and then as his schedule permits.
To date, there are just over 100 shows. Some radio stations have dropped Loafer's Glory now since it is no longer in production, but many are still playing the recorded shows from CD. Each show is one hour long and is available on compact disc from his website (www.utahphillips.org) for $15.
