In chess "connected rooks" are when a player has both of their rooks on the same rank or file with no other pieces in between them. Connected rooks are very powerful because they are extremely hard to attack; if one rook is captured, the other rook will always be able to immediately recapture the capturing piece. Rooks may be "disconnected" by the opponent however, by "interposing" a piece between them, which sometimes allows the rooks to be divided and captured individually.

Recently, some online chess commentators have taken to jocularly calling connected rooks "bros for life."
