At the moment (May 2003), Deutsche Bahn operates a fleet of about 5,500 locomotives. Unsurprisingly, the lion's share is electric, while a substantial amount of diesels remain.

The locomotive classes are ordered by number, which means they're ordered by category. For the significance of the Baureihe (class) numbers, have a look at Deutsche Bahn locomotive numbering. I have not been able to provide links to the classes not yet noded because I don't have a complete reference on what classes exist. Noding continues, though the most important locos are listed by now.
