The InterNIC is the organization that maintains the internet's root name servers. It was originaly handled by the National Science Foundation. It was late taken over by Network Solutions, which was spun off by AT&T, if I recall correctly, when the Internet was privatized. Most recently, Network Solutions became just another registrar, as ICANN took over management of the root DNS system.
