Phidias was one of
Ancient Greece's most important sculptors, an Athenian, living in the 5th century BC during the early classical movement of Greek Art. His speciality was the making of
friezes and
metopes.
A renowned work of his was the statue of Athena in the Parthenon, one of the buildings on top of the Acropolis in Athens still standing today. Rising 40ft and made of ivory and gold, it must have been quite a sight. Unfortunately, it is no longer existent, probably having been broken and its precious materials stolen by raiders. we know of its existence through the writings of poets contemporary to that age.
