Abduction: In the study of
logic, a name for inference to an
explanation from an observation, next to
deduction (inference to a consequence from a premise) and
induction (inference to a generalization from a particular). Coined by
Charles Sanders Peirce, who also called it retroduction and hypothesis.
It presumably gets its name from forcing alien statements into a theory.
