Interesting sidelight on Aesop's Fables:
Socrates had
an
inner voice that prompted him or prevented him from
various actions. Apparently he
always did what it told
him, there being only
one exception known: the voice
told him to study
music. He
failed to do this
until he was in prison, just
before his death, and of
all things, he chose to put Aesop's Fables to music.
In light of his anti-art statements made throughout his
life, this odd choice points up his lack of aesthetic
sensitivity. Not that there is anything wrong with that.
