In gauge measurement of pressure, especially low pressure measurement, such as may be useful in natural gas distribution systems, inches water column (abbreviated inch wc or simply wc) is sometimes used. It is a non-SI standard based on the pressure exerted by a one inch column of water at 4° C. Under controlled conditions, a water column gauge is often used to test and calibrate field pressure gauges for annual certification.
