Known as the "David" Guarneri del Gesu, the violin was the primary concert violin of Heifetz, considered one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century. Today, this violin is on display in the San Francisco Museum of Fine Arts. It was made by Guiseppe Antonio Guarneri del Gesu (1687-1745), shortly before his death, circa 1740. Occasionally, still played in recitals by members of the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra. Made of spruce and maple, it measures 23 1/2 x 8 x 3 1/2 (59.7 x 20.3 x 8.9cm) inches.
