This remake of the old "Shanghai Beach" maxiseries was released in 1996 and starred Andy Lau and Leslie Cheung. Set in the 1930s, the movie focuses on a former Taiwanese political activist (played by Cheung) who has escaped the slaughter of his comrades and ends up in Shanghai where he befriends an up and coming mobster (played by Lau). As the duo move up in the mobster ranks, they end up falling in love with the same woman and this has dire consequences for the both of them.

If you're like me and you've seen the original TV series (which starred Chow Yun Fat in the fole that Cheung plays), then this movie is surely going to disappoint you as it tries to take elements from the original and compress it all under two hours.

However, if you have not seen the original, then this movie isn't bad because it's done like a Chinese version of "Once Upon A Time In America" and is a pretty stylish flick. Watch it and see if you can find yourself a complete version of the original series.
