He studied philosphy in Zagreb, Vienna, Graz and Krakow, which probably accounts for his Kierkegaardian pessimism.
He became a Yugoslav Diplomat and resided in Belgrade.
Andric began his literary career as a poet, and later published collections of short stories and novellas.
In 1945 he published three novels: The Bridge on the Drina, Bosnian Story and The Woman from Sarajevo.
In 1961 Andric was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. He died in 1975.
