If
memory serves correctly, the
experimenters themselves
refused for many years to accept the result, and kept trying to find the
ether, presuming, I suppose, that their
device wasn't
accurate enough yet.
The whole notion of the ether is very much against the laws of relativity, which frown on any special reference frame such as the ether. The laws of physics are invariant, darn it!
