Vicnet - A Division of the
State Library of Victoria
An organisation devoted to promoting the use of the Internet by the people of Victoria, Australia.
Part Government funded, Vicnet also operates business activities to raise funds to support its community efforts.
Its main office is in Melbourne. Vicnet's main activities include dial up, ISDN, satellite Internet access to Melbourne and remote places like Apollo Bay and Mallacoota. Vicnet operates a free web hosting system with over 4,500 (at July 2005) active web publishers. Domain name and web server hosting (over 400 users at October 2005) is offered as is majordomo mailing lists.
Special projects include Skills.net (Internet training through hundreds of community centres across the State), My Connected Communities (online community building tools), and Libraries On Line (Internet services in public libraries across the State).
Vicnet also provides a Community Information Portal.
