The prokeimenon (plural: prokeimena) is a short passage from
Christian scripture, read or chanted with supplementary verses, in
Greek and
Russian Orthodox services. Typically it is drawn from the
Psalms and is intended to illustrate some passage from the
Gospels.
After the deacon chants it, the choir generally chants it again three times.
