This is a
tag that has been applied to actors that define their roles as much as they play them.
Marlon Brando,
Nicolas Cage,
Crispin Glover, and
Johnny Depp are all examples of actors who
transcend their characterizations, imbuing them with a feeling of
exuberance and passion to a level that approaches
camp.
This is also not to be confused with an actor like Sean Connery, who plays himself in every role (and is loved for it.) A role stylist shouldn't be confused with a thespian like Daniel Day Lewis, who is such a good actor that many are surprised to know that the cripple from My Left Foot is the strapping Brave in Last of the Mohicans.
Instead, a Role Stylist like Depp plays the roles in ways that can be described by the words "powerfully" and "passionate", but more accurately with words like "zest" and "moxie". He has been both Edward Scissorhands and Ed Wood, not Johnny Depp playing those characters. Yet, Depp's style comes through, and we enjoy seeing him have fun playing the roles.
