Whiskeytown, one of the more recent alt.country/americana bands, existed 1998-2001 (in album terms). They made three albums: Faithless Street, Strangers Almanac and Pneumonia. Their sound is somewhere between straight country, bluegrass and rock, though the last album, Pneumonia, is a lot more varied, and perhaps a sign of the new direction leading force Ryan Adams was about to take. Adams and Caitlin Cary formed the core of the band, with well over 10 other contributors over time, including James Iha (of the Smashing Pumpkins).
