Any system which carries out a designated task without user input once it is started. This phrase was originally used to describe weapons systems like the AIM-9 Sidewinder, which tracks its target in flight, allowing the pilot to launch the weapon and direct his or her attention to another task such as engaging another target or evacuating the area. Over the years, this phrase has risen to the status of cliché, and is often applied to consumer products.

Also known as launch and leave, shoot and scoot.
