'Go tell the Spartans,
Thou that passeth by,
That faithful to their precepts,
Here we lie'
It in turn forms the basis for the famous inscription to be found on war memorials worldwide penned by John Maxwell Adams during World War One:
'When You Go Home,
Tell Them Of Us And Say,
For Their Tomorrow,
We gave Our Today'.
