Camels live off the fat and water in their humps, therefore eating leftovers and spare bits in the pantry, especially over several days, is called "living on the hump". Hump food, therefore, varies, and sometimes verges on the surreal: any old vegetable is marinated, roasted, and turned into salads, dressed with oddly-flavored oils and vinegars (courtesy of a well-meaning friend, who gives them every Christmas), deluxe appetizer food is tricked up into main dishes (snail broth, anyone?), and baked beans gets tricked up with smoked turkey to produce a cassoulet that never saw Toulouse. In short, food you never thought you'd eat shows up on your table, and sometimes in your mouth. Sometimes it's good!
