Also known as a
player piano, they are
pianos that "play themselves". They are operated
by alternately pushing the two foot pedals
which causes a large reel to turn. This
reel carries a long, wide ribbon of punched
paper. The holes punched in the paper represent
which notes to play.
They make an interesting allegory to old
computers equipped with punched card readers.
