Russian composer of the age of revolution, he managed to keep his head during the revolution by virtue of his conservatism and willingness to accommodate. A pupil of Rimsky-Korsakov, he composed much, but the only of it still heard today with any frequency are his Caucasian Sketches suites, of which the finale of the 1st (the March of the Sardar) is immensely popular. A fun composer, but do not expect much depth.
