The capital of Serbia, also the captial of Yugoslavia (in whatever shape Yugoslaiva may be at the moment). Was destroyed and/or occupied around fourty times during its history, and was completely rebuilt 38 times. It was bombed and occupied by the Germans during World War II, who destroyed much of the city at the time. It was most recently bombed by NATO/US forces in 1998 in an attempt to curtail dictator Slobodan Milosevic's crimes. A city of about two million inhabitants, it is the cultural centre of Serbia, housing univirsities, museums, drama institutions, etc. Belgrade is an important Eastern European shipping port on the Danube River.
