As reported in the St. Petersburg Times, certain playground structures composed of pressure-treated lumber are leaking arsenic into the soil, resulting in contamination levels well above Florida's established limit. This lumber is treated with a compound called CCA (short for chromated copper arsenate) which has already been banned in several countries. CCA-treated lumber is also used for backyard decks and picnic tables. If you have kids, you may want to consider their amount of exposure to this stuff, and the long-term consequences. And if you're planning on building anything, be sure to shop for poison-free wood.
