S4C can actually be useful, since it airs many of the same programmes as Channel 4, but an hour later and in the original language with Welsh subtitles - very useful if you don't have a video recorder and want to watch something else on another channel.

As for Ireland, there are four channels: RTE 1, Network 2, TV3 and TG4 (formerly TnaG), thanks wertperch and ryano), a station that broadcasts mainly Irish-language programmes. In the UK, these stations can only be received in certain parts of Northern Ireland.
