City in British Columbia, part of Metro Vancouver and east of Vancouver proper. New Westminster is a city with a rich heritage and a scummy exterior. It was the first provincial capital of BC, until the capital was moved to Victoria, and has many old and distinguished buildings. A major feature is the New Westminster Quay, a large public market by the harbourside. There are several casinos, including an enormous gaudy riverboat-themed one. The Skytrain passes through New West and has two stops there: New Westminster Station and Columbia Station, which are blocks from each other along Columbia St., the main drag. New West is bounded by Burnaby to the west and north, the Fraser River on the south (and Surrey and Annacis Island across the water), and Coquitlam to the east.
