Indiana University of Pennsylvania,
IUP, is a medium-sized public university in the
Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, or
SSHE. Located about one hour northeast of
Pittsburgh in
Jimmy Stewart's hometown,
Indiana, PA.
IUP has a student population of about 13,000. IUP is a member of the
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference,
PSAC, and
IUP's football and basketball teams are perennial
NCAA Division II championship contenders.
The university was founded in 1875 as a
Normal School with 225 students and became a State Teachers College in 1927, when enrollment reached 3,000. Indiana State College achieved university status in 1965.
