This piece of plastic enables you to borrow vast numbers of
books that you may or may not have time to read. You are allowed to forget about the books you borrowed from
library stacks and rack up large
late fee charges. You do not require a
library card to enter most
public libraries, however many major
universities will refuse a person entry to the
stacks if they do not hold a card with a
photo likeness of the carrier.
It is also possible, at certain libraries, to secure computer stations for use of
educational cdroms,
internet access,
video media access, or other special technological wonders.
To attain a public library card, you often require one piece of photo ID, and proof that you live in the same community as the institution. University libraries will typically require that you are a student or member of that academic community.
