Well, as a
UNIX geek, I really hate to
node Mac stuff, but
Mac OS version
8.
1 was an
improvement over
Mac OS 8. It adds better
PowerPC optimization (but not nearly as much as
Mac OS 8.5 and
8.6 did) and a better
filesystem called
HFS+.
It will run on any
68040 or
PowerPC Mac with 16
MB or more of
RAM and a
32-bit clean ROM (the first Mac with a 32-bit clean ROM was the
68030-based
Mac IIci). It is a free
upgrade from 8.0 available at
Apple's
FTP site.
