In Japanese, the word for the number 4 is "shi."
Because the word "shi" also means "death," the number is considered unlucky.

In the US, we are used to sets of 4 for various things -- dishes, muffins, discount tickets to Disneyland. In Japan, however, because 4 is unlucky, almost everything is sold or packaged in sets of 5.
