The name of one of the offices of the
Roman Republic. The position was created when the city grew and someone was needed to supervise its upkeeping and management (the fanctions of sewers, the stability of buildings etc.). Later another job was added to this position: the managing of the Games (which became an all-consuming task towards the end of the
Republic and the beginning of the
Empire).
Towards the end of the Republic the number of the Aediles (plural from Aedilis) increased to four.
