Once hailed as a "a champion of solid dignity and quiet strength", Betty Shabazz is best known for being the widow to slain civil rights leader Malcolm X. After his assasination, Betty raised their six daughters, earned a PhD from U Mass and became a college administrator. In June 1997, she died of an infection caused by burns she received when her home was set ablaze by her 12 year old grandchild.
