The scarlet stripe found on some U.S. Marine's trousers.

Tradition holds that Marines wear the stripe to honor the Marines who fell during the Battle of Chapultepec, but in reality the stripe predates the battle. The Marine Corps lost 90% of their Officers and NCOs in the battle, and it just became part of Marine Corps lore that the stripe was authorized to commemorate the fallen.

Quick Facts:
Officers and Warrant Officers wear an Inch and a Half stripe
NCOs wear an Inch and One Eighth Stripe
