Brazzaville is the capital and largest city of the Republic of the Congo, not to be confused with the similarly named, neighboring, and much larger Democratic Republic of the Congo, whose capital, Kinshasa, lies just across the Congo River and is part of the same conurbation.

With a population of nearly 2 million souls, more than 1/3 of the entire population of the Republic of the Congo lives in Brazzaville.

The city takes its name from the Italo-French explorer Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza, who founded the city on September 10, 1880.
