CPCU stands for Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters. This is a designation bestowed upon insurance professionals. These professionals can include actuaries, accountants, small business owners, underwriters, claims adjusters, lawyers, and many others. In order to earn this designation the professional must pass nine exams and meet a related studies requirement. They must also fulfill an experience requirement, demonstrate ethical behavoir, and make a commitment to professional conduct. This designation also grants the individual entry to the CPCU Society. Once a professional who has obtained the CPCU designation has joined the society they commit themselves to the ethical code of the society and are bound by pledging the CPCU Society Creed. The society was founded in 1944. The society's stated mission is to "meet the needs of professionals who have earned the CPCU designation, so that they may serve others in a competent and ethical manner."
