Footnotes

  • Citing under fair use
  • Appeared in The Journal of Irreproducible Results (full citation mirror).
  • Often misattributed to "Unknown", "Anonymous" and many unscrupulous poets.
  • The node Ode to a Spellchecker contains several small alterations of this text. Since this text is hosted on the author's website, I consider that it supersedes the other.
  • By the author's count, 127 out of 225 words in this poem are incorrect, although there are no orthographic errors.
  • Several sites mention one Mark Eckman as the original author of the first two stanzas, although with a different spelling:
    I have a spelling checker
    It came with my PC
    It highlights for my review
    Mistakes I cannot sea.

I ran this poem thru it
I'm sure your pleased to no
Its letter perfect in it's weigh
    My checker told me sew.
These lines appeared originally in a daily e-mail digest for AT&T employees called AT&T Today. Eckman wrote them after a few weeks of debate over whether spell checker software should be used to help the less-skilled typists or that these typists should not write e-mails at all. Mr. Eckman is not mentioned at all in Dr. Zar's page
