This mountain range of Europe stretches from the Transylvaian Alps in Romania through parts of Ukraine and Hungary, and forms the boarder between Slovakia, the Czech Republic, southern Germany and Poland.
The mountains are rather wild by European standards, especially those farther to the east. Often when writers want a place to put weird magical things in Europe they will be either in the Carpathian Mountains or the Transylvanian Alps. Especially werewolves, vampires, and gypsy magic. In English language literature these mountains have become forever linked with these sorts of magical things.
In at least one movie the vampires called themselves Carpathians to distingish themselves from regular people from Romania. I thought it was rather cool idea, thinking of vampires as a bunch of very old world immigrants trying to make it in America, that happen to drink blood.
