Clay, Cassius Marcellus, an American diplomatist; born in Madison County, Ky., Oct. 19, 1810. He was an opponent of slavery and supported Lincoln for the Presidency. From 1862 to 1869 he was Minister to Russia. In 1886 he published his speeches. His old age was marked by eccentricity. He died in 1905.
