Corydalis cava
Also known as early fumitory. This is a
perennial plant found in Europe among deciduous forests, thickets and
hedges. The stem grows 6 to 12 inches high, and grows bluish-green, incised
leaves. The flowers of the plant bloom in April and May, and are purple-red,
rose, or white in colour.
The rootstock of the corydalis plant has
antispasmodic and hypnotic properties. It has a high alkaloid content which
makes it an effective remedy for palsy, trembling hands and over-excitement,
when used properly. It has an alkaloid that works on the nervous system, and
is used in certain types of drugs for Parkinson's disease. Historically,
this plant has been used to treat worms.
