(1945 - ) Mason is a singer and guitarist best known for his work with
Steve Winwood and
Jim Capaldi in the band
Traffic, but has also performed with the
Rolling Stones (
Beggar's Banquet), Jimmy Hendrix (guitar in
All along the watchtower on
Electric Ladyland),
Cass Eliott, and
Fleetwood Mac (1993 - 1996).
Mason never enjoyed commercial success after leaving Traffic, but his albums are forgotten classics. Welcome to the Canteen, a traffic reunion of sorts, features some amazing Mason jams. I used to think Winwood had once been funky, and was the responsible for the part of the Traffic sound that I enjoyed, but I've since discovered that it's Mason. His album with Mama Cass kicks ass.
