David Cutler is an operating system architect. He led the DEC team that created the VMS operating system for DEC's VAX computers, starting in 1975. He defected, along with a team of OS engineers, to Microsoft at roughly the same time that Microsoft and IBM split up their efforts to joinly develop a next-generation 32-bit OS (this effort became OS/2). Microsoft's team and Cutler's team were merged, and Cutler became the lead designer and project head for Windows NT, with as many as 200 developers under him. He's still there, as of this writing... and after nearly 30 years in the trenches as a lead operating systems designer, he still writes code, and he's still call you at any hour of the day to note his displeasure if you are a developer who has the misfortune to break the build.
